On March 30th, 100 Marquette and Milwaukee community members gathered for our first official TEDxMarquetteU event: Rooted. Every one of the event’s speakers has roots in the city of Milwaukee, in a strong sense of purpose, and in a desire to form and contribute to communities.

Speakers’ Ideas Worth Spreading

Joe Sweeney kicked off the sold-out evening of ideas worth spreading with “Networking is a Contact Sport.” With trademark energy, Sweeney spoke about the power of positive, authentic networking.

In “Mentorship Diaries,” Griselda Aldrete, CEO of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, shared the opportunities and growth that mentorship has unlocked for her throughout her personal and professional journeys.

Paige Peters, engineer and Marquette PhD student, presented “Bracing for Impact.” Her thought-provoking talk pointed to the importance of problem solving with and for communities, all with a spirit of solidarity.

After a brief intermission, Anna Oakes took the stage with “Leverage Your NOW to Get Your Best NEXT!” With enthusiasm and sincerity, Oakes inspired the crowd to intrapreneurship: using existing entrepreneurial skills to drive teams forward.

Bria Smith closed the event with the powerful, inspiring “Second Street.” In discussing where she comes from and where she’s going, Smith revealed the ripple effects of raising her own voice and the immeasurable impact of youth activism.

Whether you weren’t able to make it, or you just want to relive an incredible evening, stay tuned for the videos of each speaker’s talk.

We’ve Taken Root

The 2018-2019 TEDxMarquetteU team takes the stage.

With our first main event as TEDxMarquetteU in the books, we couldn’t be excited for what’s to come. We plan on not only hosting many more events, but creatively bringing more ideas worth spreading to the Marquette and Milwaukee communities online and on campus.

Thank you to our sponsors: Marquette University Student Government, the Graduate School of Management, and the 707 Hub for making this possible.

We’re proud to be entirely student- run. If you’re interested in getting involved or getting on stage, get in touch. If you think you know someone with ideas worth spreading, nominations are now open.

Don’t miss out on updates and upcoming events. Keep up on social media:
